Dance Musics Most Popular and Enduring Theme: The Declaration of Independence
It all started with Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" in 1979, perhaps the biggest fluke in popular music history. To follow up her hit "Never Can Say Goodbye", Gloria's label issued a song called "Substitute". The track bombed. Everyone hated it, including the radio DJs and the public. Then DJs started to play the B-Side track "I Will Survive" and the rest is history. In retrospect, it is no surprise that "I Will Survive" should have become as popular and enduring as it did. The theme of the song is universal. Who hasn't loved and lost? But the song went further and became an Anthem for reclaiming one's power. One could say Gloria is the Godmother of Girl Power. With "I Will Survive", Dance Music's fascination with a Diva declaring her independence was born! The song and theme have proven so popular that even Diana Ross, Diva Supreme herself, did her own version of "I Will Survive" in the late nineties. Later in 1979, Donna Summer jumped on the bandwagon when she released her duet with Barbra Streisand titled "Enough is Enough (No More Tears)". That song has followed "I Will Survive" into Music History as a Dance Floor Classic inspiring several remakes, including one by KD Lang and Andy Bell (Erasure) and at least two by Donna Herself: one with Tina Arena for her Live and More Encore CD and another with British boy band Westlife for DiscoMania. In the years since the genesis of the theme's popularity, it seems that no Dance/Pop Music Diva's career is complete without at least one "Declaration of Independence" (DOI) themed track in her catalogue. From Cher's "Strong Enough" to Deborah Cox's "Mr. Lonely", Anastacia's "I'm Outta Love" and "Left Outside Alone", Sheena Easton's "Strut", Amber's "Taste the Tears" (Sex & the City), Britney Spears' "Stronger", Christina Aguilera's "Fighter", Madonna's "You'll See", Destiny's Child's "Survivor", Tina Tuner's "When the Heartache is Over", Toni Braxton's "He Wasn't Man Enough" and "Hit the Highway", Pink's "There You Go", the list goes on and on. Perhaps the most popular DOI track since "I Will Survive" is Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right, But It's OK". The Thunderpuss Remix of the track became so popular a few years back that it was credited with revivng Houston's career, such is the power of a Diva declaring her independence in song. And the popularity of the theme continues on current hits. Alicia Keys' "Karmastition" is a current worldwide Radio Hit. And it's still in the pipeline, but Dance Music fans online are buzzing over the track "Sacrificial Lamb" from Amber's New CD "My Kind of World". This wholely original take on the DOI theme has the Pop/Rock Vocalist belting "Now I leave you with your arrogance, now you're crying, now you're dying, like a sacrificial lamb" on the song's powerful chorus. Dance Music's fascination with a Diva throwing her man to the sidewalk shows no sign of slowing down! Classic hits, current hits, future hits..."Declaration of Independence" tracks are as popular as ever! Zen and the Art of New Age Piano We all want to be in the moment. That's where real transformation takes place. The Case Against Traditional Piano Lessons How would you like to spend 4 years in a University learning how to play other peoples music? If you think this is ridiculous, you're right! Because that's what thousands of piano music students do each day. They sit in front of their piano or keyboard with sheet music of a dead composer in front of them. Yo, is Rap Just Another Four Letter Word? Flaunting any excessive or anti-social behavior is considered brazen. When it is no longer considered brazen it is proof that it has become embedded as part of our culture. Guitarists...Are You A Victim and A Loser? I was thinking today about THE most dangerous enemy of musical progress?the victim mentality. What do I mean by this?Often we can let our personal circumstances dictate our progress. Guitar Facts: A Glossary of Terms It is said that the forerunner of the guitar, the lute, was created by the Greek god, Apollo. In India, it is believed that the sitar, another stringed instrument from which the guitar is descended, is sacred to the goddess Saraswati. Growing and Keeping Loyal Fan Support Fan support for musicians is a two way street. You make the music, release the CDs, and play the shows. The Acoustic Guitar The steel-stringed acoustic guitar is usually credited with being developed by C.F. The First The American Idol Kelly Clarkson There is a lot more to the story that meets the eye, at least, where Kelly Clarkson, the American Idol, is concerned. Her rise to the top of the charts was not an easy one and any struggling singer-wannabe can probably identify with the grit and determination this young pop singer has shown. Why Do Music Lovers Still Prefer to Buy Records? In the late 1940's, the 45-RPM record replaced the 78-RPM record. The 45 was smaller, less breakable and could be made and sold more cheaply. 3 Quick & Easy Steps To Playing Music by Ear Playing by ear is the ability to play a piece of music (or, eventually, learn an instrument) by simply listening to it repeatedly. The majority of self-taught musicians began their education this way; they picked up their instrument and began playing an easy melody from a well-known song, slowly picking out the notes as they went along. Common Thoughts That Kill Inspiration Do you sit down at the piano and feel anxiety or peace? Are you anxious to begin creating or does the thought of being at your instrument bring you a sense of well being? It all begins with what you're telling yourself. If you think that what you are doing is not good enough, it's sure to kill off that quiet little motor of inspiration. The Need To Perform I can't believe how much of the year has gone by, but all the same, it's unbelievable how much I've grown through the year and most of it, from demolishing my need to perform.I grew up playing a lot of hockey, being captain of both my schools when I was in Nigeria and London. Guitar Practicing or Guitar Playing? Just because you're holding your guitar doesn't mean that you're playing it, and just because you're playing your guitar doesn't mean that you're practicing. There is a real difference and it needs to be acknowledged if you want to improve your level of playing skill. Free, Legal Music Online Almost everyone has heard about the massive crack down on Internet music piracy that has been occurring over the past few years. Napster was taken down (although it has now returned as a pay service), other file sharing programs now require users to pay for a license and the RIAA and other similar organizations are doing their best to hunt down copyright offenders and put an end to their crime sprees. How To Write A Song Did you ever wish that it was your song playing on the radio? It could be. It is not that hard once you know the formula. Creating Your Own Compositions The idea of actually creating a complete piece of music to play frightens many students. They just don't understand how someone could come up with something, put it down on paper, and call it their own. Painting with Sound Whenever I go to a Borders bookstore here in San Diego, I make it a point to look at the art instruction books. I'm not a visual artist, but I've always enjoyed the step-by-step approach authors of the better books take to teach students how to create a finished painting. Do You Know What a Didgeridoo Is? Do you know what a didgeridoo is? There are so many things in this life that are unknown to us. I bet you could find out about something outside your normal sphere of vision and experience everyday for the rest of your life and still not get close to knowing about everything out there. Do you really need college to learn to play music? Music courses are a great way to learn about virtually any area of music; history, theory, and musical instrument instruction -- you name it and somewhere music courses specialize in it. Though generally found through colleges, universities or high school programs, music courses are also offered via one-on-one instruction with a private teacher or community-based workshops. Music & Citizenship: Can Playing a Musical Instrument Help Your Child Become a Better Citizen? Disregard the popular image of rappers with their ghetto blasters, terrorizing neighborhoods with eardrum-splitting cacophony. Consider instead our delightful school bands and orchestras? and ponder on whether those students might be becoming our best future citizens. ![]() |
